Ken (and the Coronation Street writers) are giving homage to a classic book of the early science fiction genre when he mentions the temperature at which paper ignites. Something everyone should read at some point. There is also a really bad movie version from 1966 that is so tacky it has a strange appeal. it was shown on TV Ontario Saturday Night At The Movies a few months back.
