Swashbuckling Film Star Tyrone Power

Tyrone’s stag t-shirt did have a double meaning…

My mum used to get me out of bed when I was a kid to watch old Tyrone Power moves. She thought this irish charmer was pretty chewy….

Tyrone Edmund Power, Jr. (May 5, 1914 – November 15, 1958), usually credited as Tyrone Power and known sometimes as “Ty Power”, was an American film and stage actor who appeared in dozens of films from the 1930s to the 1950s, often in swashbuckler roles or romantic leads such as in The Mark of Zorro, Blood and Sand, The Black Swan, Prince of Foxes, The Black Rose, and Captain from Castile.

Though renowned for his dark, classically handsome looks that made him a matinee idol from his first film appearance, Power played a wide range of roles, from film noir to light romantic comedy. In the 1950s, he began placing limits on the number of movies he would make in order to have time for the stage. He received his biggest accolades as a stage actor in John Brown’s Body and Mister Roberts. Power died from a heart attack at the age of 44.

Thanks for the translation. I missed that dialogue about the T-shirt and remember Tyrone Power who was much better looking than our Tyrone from Corrie – and probably a lot smarter!

Kunzie – your Mother had such good taste.

Tyrone Power’s eyes and his speaking voice were his biggest assets. I had forgotten he died so young.

Did your Mum like William Holden?

Aye! Mum’s male harem included William Holden, Robert Mitchum, Charlton Heston, Lorne Greene and James Earl Jones pre-Darth Vader.

Hey guys, did you know Lorne Greene’s real name was Lorne Greenberg and he was from Toronto? Don’t know why I remember that, I never liked him.

Actually he was from Ottawa. His family owned a shoe repair shop.

Well, I was close. My mother was the one who told me many years ago.

I hope no one thinks I was being antisemitic, I just don’t see Pa from the Ponderosa as a Jewish dad.

My memory ain’t what it used to be but I think Jackie Dobbs once said she named Tyrone after Mr. Power. This would be back when she was bleach blond and squatting in Curly Watts’ flat with a very young Ty.
