Monday November 03, 2008 – The One Important Event Update

UK Time Friday January 18th – Episode 2

Oh Vera, why did you have to leave us? That was the only thing I could think of during the entire episode. I didn’t really care that Ryan is still missing and Michelle is still crying. I wasn’t that interested in the knicker party at Janice’s flat. I wished to rush though David’s evening with his girlfriend. Carla’s nasty presence at the pub while Maria and Liam discussed wedding plans didn’t even bother me because all I could think about was Vera and Jack.

This episode was pretty much about Jack, Molly, Tyrone and Paul dealing with Vera dying painlessly in her sleep. Her heart gave out, we learned and she didn’t suffer. Eventually everyone in the street had to learn about her death. Most members of Weatherfield’s old guard, Rita, Emily, Dev and Roy, stood around the door of the Old Rectory to learn the news and to commiserate with Jack.

Tyrone went to get Paul and together with Molly and Jack, they began to mourn Vera. In the pub, the rest of the Street regulars have a drink in her honour or react to the news. There will be a funeral, and that, you can bet, will be very sad.

All I cared about in last night’s show was Jack, Molly and Tyrone.

I think they should have devoted the entire episode to them

I am rapidly tiring of Michelle’s screaming and wailing and I can’t stand David’s new girlfriend.

  2. Betty says:

And with any luck, grave cam POV.

  3. John says:

I would have preferred that the entire episode was devoted to Vera. C’mon she’s been on the show for 30 years. Give her a proper goodbye episode. The other storylines could easily have waited.

And Ken, Deirdre, and Blanche should have been in there as well.

    Yeah, I cried.

  4. papasmurf1964 says:

The smurfman got a bit misty eyed as well

  5. Modge says:

Although I’d seen Vera’s death and its immediate aftermath on youtube almost a year ago and had expected myself to be composed, something in the grief portrayed by Bill Tarmey resulted in another pile of soggy tissues.
Agreed, the jumping back and forth between the goings-on at the Old Rectory and the other stories was jarring and quite annoying. Although I like Tina, Eileen 2.0,(anybody that gets up Gail’s nose, actually), that episode was not the time or place for it.
Hoping one day Michelle will throw her hand up to her brow while attempting to show some emotion and smack herself in the forehead with that horrible ring.

  6. Michigander Fan says:

Not only was Bill Tarmey amazing again last night, but I was also quite impressed with the gal who plays Molly (Vicky Binns). I thought she was very believable. Actually, the four of them were all good – and I actually fast-forwarded through the Michelle and Nick and Maria/Liam/Carla parts. Couldn’t care less.

I like David’s new girl. Not in a “wish she was my neighbor” way, but in a “boy this could get really interesting” way.

  7. kunzie says:

The Duckworth family scenes were a wonderful example of less-is-more and were so believable – they will be with me for a long time. I agree the rest of the plotlines could have waited a day, fo’ sho’.

If they would apply this kind of restraint to Michelle’s scenes, I think viewers would be onside very quickly. Michelle, as portrayed by Kim Ryder is plastic, 80’s North American, shrill and cardboard. Steve’s patience is unreal.

I am finding David-and-Tina to be so conveniently instant and his change in demeanour too abrupt. So what, he was never that “troubled” to begin with (?) and apparently just hates his sister?

I know everyone is going to be mad at me but I’m ok with Carla goin’ for it. Twisted and so wrong, I know. The baby, I know, I know…and no, I wouldn’t like it if it happened to me…I just think Carla and Liam are hot bodice-ripper material and Maria’s just not. IMHO.

I’m wondering now about Vera’s funeral. It would be the perfect opportunity to bring back some of the old favorites. Curley Watts used to live with Jack and V. Then there’s Mavis, Martin (well maybe not Martin) but Bett was a good friend. I don’t expect it to happen, but – will Terry show up?

  9. lovethestreet says:

    How about Frankie?

  10. eila says:

Yes– add my vote to the list: the entire episode should’ve been devoted to Vera’s family.

  11. barbie says:

Yes, I forgot about Frankie, she and Vera were good friends

  12. haili says:

It’s always interesting to see who shows up at weddings and funerals. There are always missing guests who should have been there but aren’t – maybe because the actors are not available – or maybe they cost too much! It would be interesting if Frankie showed up. I suppose it would be too much to ask for Curly to come back. I seem to remember Frankie and Jamie kissing behind a tree or something at Mike’s funeral.

  13. tanzie says:

I watched this episode 3 times. First time I cried..second time I became weepy and really paid attention to the sorrow of Jack & co. Third time I was amazed at Liz Dawn, because if i had to play “dead” with everyone standing around crying and talking about me, I would have broken out in a fit of giggles. I realise she’s an accomplised actress, but all the same, she did a very very good job.

  14. TrudyC says:

I was impressed with Molly, Tyrone & Paul’s acting. It was very sad indeed.

I kinda like David’s girlfriend. As previously stated – wouldn’t want her as my neighbour – but a good complement to David.

  15. Modge says:

I’m with you all the way on that one, Kunzie.
Liam and Maria – no chemistry whatsoever, unbelievable and quite tedious. Whereas Maria appears to be shallow and almost childlike, Carla is…well, she’s vicious and calculating, for a start. But she’s never boring. Maria is fighting a losing battle and at some level may be aware of that – she’s in panic mode, thus bringing the wedding forward. Can’t say I blame her, but it ain’t gonna work.

  16. Mandy says:

Is Frankie ever going to come back? She was gorgeous and kind and smart (minus sleeping with her step-son, but htis is Corrie, no one is perfect!). She could really show Carla how to be a classy, intelligent woman… without being a botoxed-up bitch.

  17. kunzie says:

Does anyone know – is there any truth to what I had heard, that the actress who played Frankie left the show, as did Bradley Walsh (Danny Baldwin) after they had an affair? (He at least is/was married).

If so, are there any plans for either character to return, if their personal situations permit?

  18. papasmurf1964 says:

It is true the two actors had an affair, and both agreed to leave the show (I think) to appease their respective spouses – no idea if there is any plan to write them back into the show…

  19. Yanyan says:

Och! How did I not know this????
I looooovvvvved Danny Baldwin. He’s a close second behind Jim Mac-Donald.

  20. Michigander Fan says:

    Excellent taste, my friend!

  21. beanie says:

I had no idea that was the reason for the departure WOW!!

  22. haili says:

I had read something about it but of course they denied it. I much preferred Danny and Frankie to the Connors – until the affair between Frankie and Jamie.

  23. BornToBeACorrieFan says:

A great send off for a legendary character.

I loved Danny Baldwin’s accent! So dreamy. I never knew about the affair between the actors! I assumed the actress who played Frankie left because she was very noticeably pregnant.

I loved both characters… maybe there’s a chance they could come back since neither was killed off.

I also secretly hoped we might someday see the return of Linda Sykes. I guess that is highly unlikely since most of the characters she was linked with in the past aren’t on the show anymore.

  24. mayfairgirl says:

gayle, are you kidding me? i love david’s girlfriend. he has finally met his match. literally.

  25. kunzie says:

I love Carla hatching plans alone in the dark factory office, over a drink. Just like Danny used to do 😉

  26. Mandy says:

Yeah. Only Danny grew old with class. Carla? Just trash!
