Update for the week ending April 19, 2013. Goodbye Sunita and Kirsty.

Edited to add:

Sorry – meant to draft this first.

This week we said goodbye to Shobna Gulati’s portrayal of Sunita Alahan (nee Parekh). One of the bright spots in even the grimmest of storylines, the character of Sunita took a turn when she had an out of character affair with Karl Munro.

When news spread that she was coming out of her coma, Dev rushed to her side but Karl also paid her a visit so the last thing she saw was his face as he pulled her breathing tube out, killing her. The hospital thought she may have pulled it out herself. Dev is left to tell Aadi and Asha that their mother was dead. It was all very heartbreaking. And to make matters worse, the police is considering closing the investigation,  meaning that Karl is very close to getting away with it.

Oh, and Stella broke up with Jason and is back with Karl so everything’s coming up Munroe.

Tyrone paid a final visit to Kirsty in jail. She seemed sincere in wanting to break the cycle of violence,  noting that it was Ruby who finally opened her eyes. There leaves the question of whether or not Fizz and Ty are going to move in together but Fizz noted that she didn’t like leaving Chesney alone right now.

The One O’Clock Club sounds way more interesting than Probus. Stan has been self-medicating his arthritis with special “herbal” brownies. When Sylvia tries them, her own aches and pains go away and she becomes very interested in soap bubbles. She’s aghast when she learns the real secret ingredient but eventually concedes that they work in a way that aspirin doesn’t.  Then Dennis tries them for his back but when Rita figures out what’s going on, she becomes quite moralistic for a former cabaret singer and marches them to Dr. Carter who lectures them on the negative side effects of pot, which, in your 70’s can’t be that big a concern. Besides, eating it in brownie form must be more pleasant than shooting up hashish (you shoot it up, right? I, of course, have no idea).

Wearing that kimono Martha gave him, Ken forgets his wedding anniversary to Deirdre but manages to finangle a last minute anniversary party. She’s not fooled though.

Gary & Izzy are having a boy in Tina’s womb. Tina is having conflicting feelings but is too rattled by a break in at her flat to dwell on them. But Gary helps her through it so … yay Gary?

    welcome back! 🙂

…. everything’s coming up Munroe I see what you did there, and I must say, very clever.

Good to see the connection Sophie had to Sunita was not conveniently forgotten, the character did such an abrupt 180 I thought they would sweep it under the carpet.

Dr. Carter must have a small practice, how many GPs can take the time to look after such trivial matters. Most in Canada barely have the time to wash hands between patients. Oh to live in Weatherfield, where docs are available and even make house calls.

  3. Mary Prankster says:

Maybe it’s my North American background, but I’m surprised Dev has made no mention of a lawsuit against the hospital for allowing Sunita’s death. Whoever was in charge of that ICU was certainly negligent, not making it clear to the staff that Sunita was not to be left alone under any circumstances. They were decreasing her medication, planning for her to come out of her coma. When they tried it the night before she became “distressed”, attempting to remove her breathing tube, yet they were repeating this procedure again, without having her constantly monitored, with no alarm connected to alert them to just this situation. Also, there seems to have been no camera in the room of a suspected arsonist, who is possibly responsible for a death, who at the very least is a material witness. If I were Dev, especially with his temperament, I’d be raising hell! The police have been very careless too, in not guarding the room.
I realize this would not allow this ridiculous plot to advance, but when it’s so implausible it makes it hard to watch.

Well said! I always assumed if one was in intensive care they are constantly being monitored and visitors are very limited. People just don’t stroll in and out of rooms like Karl did. I also found it hard to watch.

Who is next to confess? I hope it’s Tracey Barlow!

  5. S. Poole says:

Good episode, very well acted. Creepy Karl was stellar, Lloyd and Steve with just the right touch of humour to balance things a bit. Remember the conveyer taking Fred (I say our Fred!) into the crem nearly broke down as his casket started to lurch forward.

Wondering though why no Amber at the funeral. Yes, she is only Dev’s daughter but still, makes sense she would be there for her dad. I know she and Sunita did not get along after both had personality transplants courtesy the writing staff but thought maybe there would at least be a mention of Amber man.

There was a mention of Amber, but only in passing, and only to say that she wasn’t coming, no real explanation. Also, all of Sunita’s relatives not attending, because “she brought shame on the family”? Which shame are we talking about, being an adulterer, being a suspected murderer, or being a suspected suicide? I’m confused. The funeral just seemed so much sadder than it had to be, with so few people attending. Where were all the rest of the neighbours? After the Tyrone/Kirsty thing, you’d think some folk would have learned not to be so quick to judge. But this is Corrie, what am I saying?

      • S. Poole says:

Thanks for clarification, glad to hear they did not rewrite more history. Must have been half paying attention when Amber was mentioned. I am often multitasking when the show is on lately, probably either a moment of inattention or daydreaming about Karl killing Stella. 🙂

Looks like Leanne is going to be the new non-Koolaid drinker, seeing through Karl while the others are bamboozled by his smarminess.

Powerful ending tonight, Jimmi Harkishin doing some good things as Dev, will be interesting to see if he goes back to being goofy lovable Dev when the grieving is done.

  6. Jody says:

LOL…you dont shoot up hash 🙂
    It is smoked like pot.
