Update for Tuesday, September 13. 2011. “A Lot Can Happen in a Week”

Let’s start with Owen, shall we? There’s been some speculation as to his true nature since he joined the street. Hot-headed? Certainly. Over-protective? Sure. But evil? Well…

After Gary Windass’s PTSD caused him to abuse the fruit machine in the Rovers, Owen identified a repair job what needed fixing. He promised to do the job for £5,000, money Steve really doesn’t have after the sale of Max was financed.

Side note – there has to be an essay to be written somewhere about how the show constantly put its characters is tight financial straights. If they ever make too much money, realistically, they’d sell up and leave the street. But the show always finds debts for them which keep them from getting ahead in life and therefore, still on the street. Hey, that’s just like real life!

So the builders set to work. And by “work” we mean they’re all having tea. Steve good-naturedly jokes about it but then he receives a call from Jim, who’s in hospital. Owen offers to drive, noting that Steve had a few pints for lunch and may not be in a fit state to drive.

When they get there, a battered and bruised Jim explains to Steve that he was jumped in another pub but also tells him that his attackers knew exactly who they were looking and tells Steve to be wary of Owen. When Owen gets him alone, he tells Jim, “So now you know which bars aren’t friendly. Add the Rovers to the list.”

Back at the Rovers, the builders are now having pints and Steve is getting annoyed. At the end of the “work” day, Chris tells Owen he’s heading over to the same pub where Jim was attacked. Owen hands him a wad of bills and says, “If you see the lads, tell them that’s for a job well done.”

Chris admits misgivings about this as his leaves. If the guy who abuses his wife thinks you’ve gone too far, you’ve gone too far.

I have to say I like that John and Charlotte have become this dark farce. In exchange for keeping quiet, John has agreed to be “Colin” when he’s with her so that means more lies to Fizz and afternoons off from a tolerant Peter.

We also learned that Charlotte threw away the coursework of an impertinent student, causing him to miss his chance to go to university. And she once dated a vegan who spent their dinner dates staring at her with pursed lips and resentment.

So Charlotte throws a surprise engagement party for her and “Colin” where he meets her parents. John manages to squirm out of Christmas dinner but not out of doing the dishes with Mr. Hoyle who won’t do with dishwashers (“They’re the Devil’s work!”).

After Leanne ditched Carla and her troubles for another fling with Nick, Carla went to the Rovers to drown her sorrows. There, Ken asked her if she had seen Peter. She told him he was…at the Joinery. And so for the second time in their lives, Ken walked in on Leanne and Nick having it off (the first time was over ten years ago when he was chasing Les Battersby through the rafters and fell through the ceiling and onto their bed – long story).

Ken, who can’t exactly take the high ground when it comes to infidelity, is now burdened with this information and faced with the dilemma of telling Peter. Leanne pleads for his silence and eventually, they agree that the affair is over and going forward, she will be faithful to Peter and this will never be spoken of again.

Later, Ken, Deirdre, Leanne, and Peter are all assembled in the Rovers. Lloyd, sitting next to Carla, notes that after all they’ve been through, they may actually make it to the wedding next week.

“Oh, I don’t know,” Carla says. “A lot can happen in a week.”

Also, Lloyd will be the DJ at the wedding. Peter has requested no gangsta rap because, you know, Lloyd “Northern Soul” Mullaney is totally into that. I wonder if he has any experience.

Molly’s not going to get pregnant with that second child if she keeps taking birth control. And her weird reaction to Christmas with the Websters has sent Tyrone on a stress-eating binge where he starts eating his way through the chocolate bars at the Kabin.

For her part, Rosie isn’t all that fussed about the Dobbs coming over, especially if Molly’s going to insist on whipping out the jubblies to feed Jack. Because that’s just inappropriate.

Anyway, Tyrone confronts Molly about her behaviour and she begins to cry, telling him that she can’t tell him what is wrong. He pushes it but baby Jack’s cry prevents it from going further.

Finally, judging by the sound effects, I want to live in Weatherfield where they appear to have a tram going by every five minutes. That’s just good public transit.

Was there always an overhead tram, or are we just hearing more of it lately? I can’t remember. Seeing John as Colin, and watching the actress who plays Charlotte chew up the scenery, is actually quite amusing.
Thank you, John, as always, for a wonderful update.

  2. John says:

Before they revamped the credits, there was always a shot in the opening titles of a tram crossing the viaduct. But during the show, you’d never hear tell of one. Lately, however, they’ve been adding the sound effect. I’ll avoid spoilers and just say there is a plotline involving the tram as part of Coronation Street’s 50th birthday coming up this week.

  3. haili says:

Instead of starting with Owen – let’s finish with him! I hope a tram gets him and his nasty mean face. It was so disappointing that Jim got beaten up rather than Owen.

It sounds like a lot of stuff is about to hit the fan this week and maybe it’s about time. We should finally get an end to the Kevin and Molly stuff at least. What bugs me lately is the way Kevin and Molly and sometimes even Molly and Tyrone scream and yell at each other with the baby sleeping between them. Who does that? If you want a good marital spat, don’t you put the baby to bed out of the way first?

  4. corrierules says:

Haili I was thinking the same thing… everybody talks about how much they love Jack, only want the best for him while exposing him to toxic arguments.

As for the tram, it’s figuring quite prominently these days. It’s as if Coronation Street has become a transit terminal.

And I have a question to throw out…. what’s the verdict on CS one hour every weekday? I’m finding it a bit onerous. There I’ve said it. I love Corrie, but that’s a lot of TV to commit to…

    • S. Poole says:

Not bothered by the extra 30 minutes but they are spacing the adverts differently than before, my skip FWD on the DVR finger is out of sync.

And please send Nick back to Canada. Worst “recasting” in Corrie history.

    • Long Time Lurker says:

Corrierles – I have to agree with you. I’m finding the one hour a bit too much. I actually catch myself checking the time to see when it will be over (which I never did before). Maybe, it’s just right now, since there seems to be so many “intense” plotlines going on. A half hour a day of that was ok; an hour is too much.

      • Bea says:

I also find an hour is a bit long. I never thought I would ever say that. Also, the timing of 6:30 to 7:30 makes it impossible to watch anything else that starts at 7. I agree that there is really nothing else on, but the new season is about to start and there might be something worth watching. (here’s hoping)

        Whine, whine, whine. ;o)
Anyway, I am waiting impatiently, as it does seem that they are leading up to something. Christmas is coming, so I guess there will be at least a food fight. lol

  5. haili says:

I love the hour every night. There’s nothing else on anyway most of the time. Some episodes are better than others. Last night I couldn’t hear half the dialogue in the first half hour but lots and lots of trams drowning it out. It does seem a bit sudden to have all that tram noise that we didn’t get for years.

Nick is bad casting but it seems that Leanne still loves him anyway and is making a big mistake marrying Peter. This shows what a good actress Jane is and maybe she’s picturing Nick #1.

    • Long Time Lurker says:

That’s what I did last night, haili – tried to picture Nick #1. It’s the only way I can rationalize what Leanne seems to be going through right now.

  6. corrie heart says:

Thanks once again to John for a great recap as well as info on trams,Corrieconomics and the flashback to Ken catching Nick & Leanne in flagrante (version 1.0). I am loathe to admit it but I confess that I too find one hour of Corrie a little long. I guess it’s too much to expect a cat fight (or punch up) every 20 minutes to liven things up (although we may be in store for a few).

  7. Long Time Lurker says:

    Tonight’s Corrie – OMG!!!

  8. TJ says:

OMG! I’ve never seen anything like it!

  9. barbee says:

I knew it was coming but avoided the spoilers, so was totally unaware of the magnitude of the disaster. Wasn’t it incredible? Most exciting Corrie ever (and I did see the Rovers mess when baby Tracy disappeared, Bet’s fire, and others I’ve forgotten) , and it was so realistic. Thanks to the magic of satellite tv, I watched it twice – before and after aquafit!
I loved the Dr. Who effect with John. Other favourite moments: Claire enjoying her reading while the kids played, Ashley wanting to go home to Claire (despite the fact I think she’s been a total shrew lately); Graeme telling Tina “it’s only stuff, my whole world is here”; Janice pulling through her hen night revelry and remembering her first aid course; Eileen and Gail (temporary truce); Lloyd actually pulling Ch (with a hard CH) eryl’s ex out of the mess, “beggars can’t be choosers” is what I think he said; Jason the hero – I have to wait until tomorrow to see what happens with him and Simon; and Carla seemingly having some kind of revelation; and of course Gary Windass – I could have a son his age, and that really brought home the situation for our young soldiers.
I have really hated the Kevin/Molly thing – I never bought into the original affair (starting on the stairs of # 5) and I hated Molly’s eyes, her clinging and Kevin’s being totally led by his “little” brain. It really wasn’t in character. That said, if I had a Rosie at home, I’d be totally looking for ways to avoid the family abode.
Anyway, lots of good stuff to come. I guess John will use the situation to dispose of Charlotte’s body, how fortuitous! I hope Max turns up. Maybe Owen will be thankfully dispatched – didn’t see him at all, thank God, during the hour long ep. Please find Rita, and I hope Icky Nicky gets lost in the rubble. Peter needs to survive, Fizz needs to get to hospital pronto, John needs to deal with Charlotte, Becky needs to find Max.
The hour long thing I can deal with while my husband is away, however, double time on Sundays (which is when I watch when he’s home) may drive him crazy!

  10. corrierules says:

I take back what I said about one hour being too much Corrie. Last night was ah-mazing! Unlike barbee, I have been “spoiled” and yet my heart was still in my throat and my eyes welled up.

  11. lovethestreet says:

So glad people have started posting comments about last night’s episodes — whoa!

Loved Sean and Janice with the first aid, hated the dialogue between the doctor and Gail (BTW, has he ever been in the Rovers before last night?), and am praying that they don’t kill off darling Simon (who is also the only child who can act on the show). The scene with Becky finding Sunita was a good one too.

Also, did I miss something or was there any mention of Amy? Becky and Steve are running around looking for Max, but where is she?

Final thought: John is a Tool. Capital T Tool.

  12. haili says:

I hope Amy is home in bed where Max should be. I liked the way Sean took charge instead of going into hysterics and Janice tried her best to remember first aid.

I did wonder why Dev and Ciaran weren’t lifting that heavy beam off Sunita but maybe it was pinned down somehow.

For once I didn’t blame John for throwing that hammer. I think I would have done the same! Too bad he didn’t think to drag her out into the back someplace. Who was standing beside their front door as it all happened?

  13. Modge says:

Haili, I think that was Tyrone…gazing across the road, gob-smacked at what his life had suddenly devolved into…while unknowingly looking in the direction of Molly’s babydaddy.

  14. Mary Prankster says:

Does anyone know why the producers decided to destroy the set for the 50th anniversary? I think I read something a while ago about them selling the property and moving, but I can’t remember what the facts were. What a dramatic way to wipe the slate clean, of both location and characters. Now the question becomes “Who remains after the smoke (and rubble) clears?!” I’m also wondering if we’ll find out if that tram was supposed to be empty for some reason, or why we’re not seeing any other victims than the street’s residents.
And haili & Modge….yes, it was Tyrone. I watched it again.

  15. Mary Prankster says:

Why was that enormous mallet conveniently lying on the top of the sofa (chesterfield?).

Regarding the hour-long commitment, it takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s only for a few months, until we come closer to catching up, which will be worth it, both in terms of no more spoilers, and flexibility for seeing any missed episodes from the ITV site.

  16. Long Time Lurker says:

Amy, of course, is in the dishwasher, where she always is.
Maybe the mallet/hammer was for the nail for the wreath on the front door.
And I doubt that anyone will ever open an upscale bar on the Street again.
And maybe they should cancel hen parties/stag nights on the Street as well.

I’m still stunned at the total carnage and wondering who actually survives. Hopefully Rita does; hopefully Peter as well; and baby Jack; and of course Simon and Jason (or was it Lloyd)and Max. I can’t even imagine how sad Christmas 2010 will be on Corrie Street.

  17. Mary Prankster says:

What was that comment that Kieran made about the gas, & why he couldn’t make hot food?

  18. misspimms says:

Such a powerhouse week on Corrie. Talk about intense. Jane Danson has been amazing. Loving the hour too. But along with where were Liam and Amy, I missed where Chesney and Katie emerged from when they arrived in the delivery room — driven by Owen (oh my but he is pure evil). Poor Ashley.
