Monday June 14th – The Update

UK Time Monday August 24th – Episode II

The show opens with Jason being taken away in the back of a police car while Eileen is getting on in the street like Mary J. Blige at a New York restaurant. Eileen is sure her son would never jump and beat up someone in the street. She explains to Gail that she knows this because her sons would also never push her down the stairs and doesn’t have a history of violence and assault, unlike David. She also calls David a “Chav.” For those of us not familiar with the nastier elements of British slang, a “Chav” is a young person generally poor and prone to violent crime. The word is actually an acronym for Council House and Violent. Charming.

You know, it has been a long time since we have had a good Gail and Eileen rowdy in the street. I rather enjoyed this one. They hit on all the usual points. Chav son, slut daughter. This time, however, Tina gets in the mix and she lands some choice insults on David. She also threatens to beat him within an inch of his life. She’s pretty awesome.

The Grimshaw side goes back indoors to find Jesse looking staring at his parrot. They have a moronic conversation and the upshot is, the parrot doesn’t like Eileen, their relationship is in jeopardy.

Later Jason comes home from the cop shop as they have no evidence that Jason has done anything.  PS, Jason is dropping it like it’s hot in that green tank top. Jason is worried that it wont matter that they have no evidence.

Meanwhile over at the Platts, David is defending himself against Gail, and Audrey. They are rightfully suspicious.

I guess Audrey is setting up camp in the Platt household as later Joe arrives home with some groceries. Gail asks him how he paid for it and Joe has to go over the humiliating aspects of his financial life in front of Audrey, well done, Gail.

Later on in the day David walks around the corner to find none other than Gary Windass leaning up against the wall enjoying a kebab. He and David chat a bit before Gary tells David that he made some great friends inside and that they still keep in touch. David gets his meaning and it suddenly dawns on him that perhaps Gary was behind the beating. Well, one of Gary’s friends as he was only released that morning.

Over at the street’s pre-funeral parlour Emily and Ramsay are chatting when Norris pops in with new pajamas. Ramsay mentions that he will be giving notice at his bed-sit. Norris assumes that he will be heading back to Australia and can not contain his glee.

Its pretty clear that Emily wants to get with Ramsay. She musters up the courage to ask Ramsay if he will go to her husband’s grave with her. It’s a date!

At the cemetery Ramsay and Emily walk through the graveyard talking about his life as an orphan sent abroad (somehow, I think there must be some sort of historical reference here regarding England sending her shame to the colonies.) They also talk about when Norris might stop behaving like such a div (expression mine).

That evening Norris comes home and thinking that Ramsay is going to lave town, he happily plays scrabble with them.

In the butcher shop Ashley and Graeme talk with Claire about the lack of prizes for the raffle. Clair would like to raffle off Ashley’s balls boxing gloves. Ashley is delighted to tell her that Roy is donating that trip to Pairs he got because Eddie Windass committed a minor identity theft. Claire is really pleased.

Later Ashley enters his shop to learn that 1. Graeme is reading his text messages and 2. Claire is at home expecting sex. This is troubling because Ashley is afraid to have sex with Claire because he didn’t actually have the vasectomy she thinks he did. I find it hilarious that they are having this conversation while Graeme stands under a sign that says “Pork.”

I guess as a way to get out of the situation Ashley comes home with Graeme in tow where Claire is waiting in a hot pair of garters and a slip she borrowed from her mother. She really should have gone for a white lace body suit. It would have been way more flattering.

  1. Gayle says:

When oh when is Ashley going to “Man Up” and tell Clair the truth! I loved the basket of flowers Graham was carrying they are my favourites! Nice to see Gary back putting the fear of God into David. Love it!

  2. haili says:

But I hate Gary more than David!

This whole thing with Ramsay and Norris makes me think that maybe Norris has a point. Shouldn’t both parties – the mother and offspring – be in agreement before meeting? It seems pretty insensitive for the adopted son to just show up like that without a thought of who might be hurt. That was why adoption used to be confidential.

Anyway Emily and Rita got pretty close to Ramsay right away before even hearing Norris’s point of view. Nasty little man that Norris is, he has supposedly been their friend for years and Ramsay was a stranger.

Ashley needs to grow a pair.

    • Mark Daye says:

      OMG! He’s not/wasn’t adopted.

      • Beanie says:

Mark is right. Ramsay was shipped out of the orphanage to Aussie. In that same time period, Many many children in Ireland were sent to Montreal.

I was very interested in that and I’m glad Corrie writers chose to include such a dismal period.

    • eps says:

Adopted??? Due to the World Cup, no omni, no evening Corrie I am quite ill-informed since I can’t record a 3:30 broadcast. What’s the deal with Ramsey?

      • haili says:

Ramsay (and Norris’s) mom had him when she was young and single and put him up for adoption. He ended up in an orphanage and was sent to Australia where he had a hard life with whoever took him in.

He looked for his mother and when he showed up, she had a heart attack and died and Norris has blamed him for her death and wants nothing to do with him.

      • eps says:

Ahh, thank you Haili. Now I get it. For all of his bluster Norris is not a contemplative thinker by any stretch of the imagination, is he?

  3. Bea says:

That CHAV thing is just disturbing!

  4. S. Poole says:

Loved the scene where David realized Gary was behind the beating, looks good on the little puke.
Some touching scenes Mon-Tues with Ramsay. I was thinking he might be a home child when he told Emily his history in the cemetery. Maybe there was a similar program with children going to Australia? My favourite Uncle was a home child, he rarely if ever discussed his past.

    http://www.britishhomechildren.org/

During the Child Emigration Scheme (called now British Home Children), between 1869 and the early 1930s, over 100,000 children were sent to Canada alone from Great Britain. According to the UK House of Commons Child Migrant’s Trust Report, “it is estimated that some 150,000 children were dispatched over a period of 350 years—the earliest recorded child migrants left Britain for the Virginia Colony in 1618, and the process did not finally end until the late 1960s.”

  5. Robin says:

My great grandfather was also a home child coming from Liverpool to Canada in 1906 as a 9 year old! I do know that there were home children sent to Australia as well.

I know recently (November 2009)? That the UK government made an official apology to British home children sent to the colonies. So I imagine the issue was revisited in the news perhaps around the time this storyline originally aired?

  6. Trudy says:

Graeme is beyond hilarious. When he took the meat cleaver to the pork tenderloin after talking about the non-vascetomy – priceless.

    • missusmac says:

I pretty much love everything about Graeme Procter, Garden Doctor. He has no filter, says what he thinks, but it’s all so entertaining.

I love that he told David “I’m getting a life, you should try it.” Neither Graeme nor Darryl seem too keen on David anymore — about time!

What is the relationship between Kevin and Molly now? I’m confused. Do they want to continue the affair or not?

  7. corrierules says:

I also love Graeme Proctor the Garden Doctor.
As for Kevin and Molly this is what they want — she wants to keep b**chin and moanin because she is very hard done by, to keep thinking she looks sexy when she looks ridiculous and to keep feeling very sorry for herself. Feh!As for Kevin, he wants to keep playing hide the monkey wrench with Molly (why, I’ll never know!) but he doesn’t want to hurt Sal and the gurrrls.

I really lost a lot of respect for Norris this week. He made Emily cry! What a small, petty man. But beautifully played by Malcolm Hebden. Such a joy to watch the old pros (Emily, Rita, Malcolm, Betty, Norris) at work.

  8. haili says:

Ramsay wasn’t adopted but his mother probably thought he was, since she gave him up. Surely, she wouldn’t think he’d just be shipped away to another country. It is sad that a man his age would still be looking for love from a brother who never knew him – and has no interest in knowing him.

There are sad stories about the kids that were sent here and to Australia. In those days (and sometimes now) no matter what the mother did she would be criticized: keep the baby, adoption or abortion.

  9. corrierules says:

While i think Norris behaved in a small and petty way, I think this whole storyline gave me some insight into what makes him tick. I think his mom was small and petty and not very loving. that kind of upbnrining does not result in a generous and giving spririt.

CS presents a very idealized version of how a person with a brain tumour dies. Many years ago, Rita’s second husband, Ted Sullivan had the same diagnosis. He died peacefully while watching a bowls match. Ramsay stays fit as a fiddle until his sad demise and dies while flying to Oz. Quick, easy and peaceful. But not too realistic, I think.

  10. haili says:

Norris is going through some complicated emotions these days and I think he’s feeling pretty guilty and small after the way Rita and Emily talked to him. He must have had a strange childhood and hasn’t yet mentioned his father. Of course it’s always mom who gets the blame if things go wrong, but where was dad?
