Update for Tuesday, February 15th, 2011. Magnificent Desolation

(Corrie Standard Time: April 26, 2010)

Tyrone is packing Molly’s carry-on bag and she’s already making good on her promise to Kevin that she’s taking Ty and the baybeh away from Weatherfield so she’s putting a bug in Ty’s ear about moving away to Chester for a fresh start.

She does get a good line about the British habit of bringing grapes to hospital patients:

“Contrary to popular opinion, not everyone gets a insatiable craving for grapes the minute they hit NHS sheets.”

When they get home, she tells Ty that their house still feels like Jack and Vera’s, right down to the stone cladding that they never could get rid of. Ty tells her that’ll change eventually and besides, he doesn’t have a good job to go to like last time.

At the garage, Kevin notices Tyrone is day dreaming and Ty tells him about the plan to move to Chester. Not so surprisingly, Kevin encourages him.

Back home, Molly has hobbled around the kitchen enough to throw together some curly fries (“They’re just like little shock absorbers!”) and fish fingers. Ty is confused by Kevin’s encouragement in regards to the move. He thinks Kevin wants to get rid of him so Molly seizes this and tells him that the only thing they need is each other and a garden.

So Audrey decided to take a peak at Lewis’s black book, which he left at the salon last week. She looks at some of the entries, including one client whose politics are described as “hang ’em and flog ’em”.

Then she sees her own entry and is described as an average tipper. So her man-whore comes over and she confronts him about her entry. She tells him that she wants to bring their business relationship to an end and starts to cry, thinking that she’s felt awful about thinking she was anything but a client. Then he goes and kisses her and shows that they may have been all business before but now he’s all business about getting into her business.

Mary may be a whack job but there is nothing I’m loving more than Norris/Mary dialogue.

As Norris complains about the misplacement of Nuts magazine (they love to reference that magazine on this show), Rita is teasing Norris about his romantic getaway to Bronte country. Norris thinks she allows her emotions to run away with her.

As they prepare to leave, Mary assures Norris that should they hear the call of nature, relief is just a rest-stop away. She talks romantically about what Buzz Aldrin called “magnificent desolation” only he was talking about the moon and not West Yorkshire.

“About as much to do,” Norris mutters.

Then, they board Mary’s ginormous RV as she puts on some thematically appropriate music. The radio gives us the dulcet tones of the patron saint of road trips everywhere: St. Kate of Bush. Even the vampires on “Being Human” think so:

When they get to their destination, Mary makes Norris a toad in the hole with chorizo that she calls “Toad in the H’Olé!” She says her toad in the hole has been enjoyed in many places.

In other news:
Natasha is throwing herself at Nick. This will not end well.

Sophie got a part time job at Dev’s (who is finalizing the purchase of Maria’s house) so she can earn her own money and, oh yeah, take the train to Southport more often to see Sian who is totally her girlfriend now.

John, I think it often but cannot remember actually saying that I appreciate your updates.
Thank you. Your little guy have any more favorite vids? Alan. Alan.

Another line either from tonight or last night (watched both episodes tonight) was Gary’s response to his wife’s concern re: that saying “luv” on the phone to the social worker would be put in their file: “They’re the British modern version of the Stasi” That cracked me up.

Grandpa Webster was OK with Sophie using his keys to hang out in the office of his storage yard while not letting him in? I didn’t get that. Did he think she had an assignation with a boy and that was OK?

Forgot to add: any opportunity to hear Kate Bush makes my day though I am a bit stunned to see that that vid was from 33 years ago. 33!

  2. Suzanne says:

Mary and Norris driving off to Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights was the highlight for me. I absolutely love Mary. Hope they can keep her around for a long while.

  3. Trudy says:

As soon as the music was turned on in the RV I starting laughing – OMG Kate Bush!!! Of course my 22 year old son did not get it at all. Man I’m old!!

  4. chumola says:

That was “Toad in the Hole”? That dish really cracked me up, I don’t think it usually looks quite like that – Freud would have a lot to say about this one! Mary, Mary, Mary!

  5. haili says:

I never heard of Kate Bush but her voice is like chalk on a blackboard! Norris is taking a big chance, going away with weird Mary and he had some funny lines last night. I loved his comment about the Brontes not living past 40.

What kind of scam is Lewis up to? I just don’t believe he’s in love with Audrey; call me cynical!

  6. Gayle says:

I don’t understand why Kevin would object to Sophie getting a little part-time job just a couple of doors from home. It’s nice to a young person on that street with a bit of ambition. My husband laughs at David’s “job” all he seems to do is sweep the floor LOL. Natasha must be really hard up lusting after Nick ugh.

  7. haili says:

Once in a while David makes tea or coffee – or goes out for biscuits. Didn’t he want to apprentice at one time? He had a job for about 5 minutes with another hairdresser a couple of years ago.

I thought Kevin over-reacted about Sophie’s little job – but then he over-reacts at everything these days.

  8. lovethestreet says:

Thanks for the update! Add me to the list of people who laughed out loud to Kate Bush on the car stereo.

    I hope Molly moves…soon.

  9. Long Time Lurker says:

That whole Norris and Mary scenario is looking more and more like “Misery” with each passing day. Is anyone else expecting Mary to haul out the – what did Kathy Bates use – baseball bat/axe?
I did laugh out loud when Mary had sleeping Norris snuggle up to her breasts – creepy on so many levels.

    • lovethestreet says:

You called the copy-cat “Misery” storyline alright. Tonight’s twisted ankle episode confirms it. I guess Mary is Norris’s “number one fan”!

    • chumola says:

OMG did you see the look on Mary’s face???? Even though Norris is not my favourite character, I fear for him!

      • Long Time Lurker says:

And then, tonight, when she was berating her mother…. it was as if she was channeling Norman Bates.

  10. Gayle says:

John, I must thank you for sharing the videos that your little boy enjoys. We had a family gathering on the weekend with 4 Corrie fans in the mix and they loved your animal videos. Of course my cool 22 year old son thought they were a “bit funny” but then again he has always hated Corrie!
